On Tuesday, the Australian Football League (AFL) announced that it had suspended player Cameron Smith for five matches as part of its investigation into allegations of malicious action and foul play in his recent match against Sydney Roosters.

The incident in question occurred during the round eight clash between the two teams at Parramatta Stadium, where Smith was accused of deliberately kicking the ball out of bounds on purpose. The footage from the game showed that Smith had intentionally kicked the ball towards the goal line but then deliberately allowed it to bounce back out of bounds.

The AFL has since confirmed that the footage has been reviewed by an independent third party and that the decision to suspend Smith for five matches was made after thorough consideration of all the evidence.

Smith's suspension will come into effect immediately and he will miss the upcoming games against Geelong, Essendon, Melbourne, North Melbourne and St Kilda. It is believed that this is the maximum number of matches that can be suspended under the AFL's disciplinary code.

The AFL has also announced that it will conduct a review of its rules and regulations regarding player behavior and discipline before the end of the season. This comes after a number of high-profile incidents involving players in recent years, including the controversial incident involving former player Adam Goodes in 2014.

In response to the news, AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said: "We take these matters very seriously and have a zero-tolerance approach when it comes to player behavior. We will continue to work closely with our clubs and players to ensure that we maintain the highest standards of conduct both on and off the field."

Overall, this latest incident highlights the importance of fair and impartial decision-making in sports such as football. While suspensions can serve as a deterrent, they should not be seen as a punishment or a way to silence dissenting voices. Instead, they should be used as a tool to promote integrity and accountability among athletes and their supporters alike.
